Energy

New trends and developments in economics, geopolitics, industry behavior, and technology are causing tectonic shifts in the energy industry’s global landscape—and CIS countries are not immune. These shifts pose both a significant threat to and a major opportunity for the energy industry. While some players will capitalize on these opportunities, others will see their value to shareholders and other stakeholders diminished or destroyed.

Global energy demand is expected to increase more than 50 percent by 2025. With unstable demand, fluctuating oil and gas prices, tight refining capacity, and increasing environmental concerns, there is significant pressure on all facets of the oil, gas and power industry to reduce costs, improve production, invest in new technology, and increase margins and revenues. All of which must be done while addressing issues of environment, supply security, infrastructure, and growth.

This energy landscape will continue to change: new policy frameworks will develop for carbon dioxide; restructuring will accelerate in some markets; re-regulation will appear in others; and the trend toward consolidation will continue.

Our Practice

The Boston Consulting Group has worked in countries that have seen their gas and electricity industries go from being among the most heavily regulated to being among the most competitive. In Russia we work with major Russian and international companies in the energy sector, helping them navigate an increasingly complex business environment.

In doing so, we help our clients:

  • Clarify their businesses in a global context while optimizing international strategy

  • Draw lessons—from countries already having undergone deregulation—applicable to companies operating in Russia

  • Use international examples to provide best practice scenarios on issues ranging from production, to transport, to sales.

We are working with our Russian energy clients of a variety of projects to create shareholder value. These include sector and product strategy, organizational capability building, transformation, and operational improvement.
