Strategy

Strategy underlies the origins of BCG; BCG underlies the origins of strategy.  In the early 1960s, our founder Bruce Henderson created many of the fundamental principles of what was, at that time, the emerging discipline of business strategy.  Since then, phenomenal growth in this area—with BCG remaining a leader in the field—has allowed us to make an innovative and active contribution to the many, ever-evolving ideas in strategic thinking.

The concept of strategy is being continually changed by:

  • Increased market volatility

  • Less-sustainable market leadership resulting in weaker profitability

  • External factors and new social norms

  • More people with more access to more information

  • Growth in strategy activity outside the firm

  • More intense and more diverse competition

These factors have led BCG to review its approach to strategy development. Gone are the days of accumulating capital by competitively seizing assets. We’re at the threshold of an era where companies based in rapidly developing economies are growing in scale and moving into global markets, an era where business effectiveness is critical.

The implementation of a well thought-out strategy is crucial for any Russian company. In the current recessionary environment, a business must ensure that its strategy prepares it to survive turbulent times, retain its market position, and to take advantage of all new opportunities.
