A Personal Story
BCG indeed has unique people. I would describe it as an extreme concentration of fresh ideas, diverse backgrounds, and an appetite for intellectual challenges. It’s very easy to get new experiences here—people are always happy to share their knowledge with you, give advice, and welcome you to join various initiatives. Therefore it’s not surprising that cutting edge ideas easily find support in the company—many case teams implement new methodologies and approaches, for example IP and Social Networks brought a lot of insight into many projects and were valued by the clients.

There are also the outstanding social activities, both internal and external. I’m involved in charity projects and we support an orphanage not far from Moscow. And it’s not only financial aid we offer. We also focus on the kids’ personal development, on everything that may help them in the future. It’s amazing how heated discussions can get, about who to take for a summer internship or how we can help to prepare them for university entrance exams. But this is understandable, as every decision we make affects other people’s lives.

A Personal Story
The client was a global manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, and the eight month project was to devise a strategy for relaunching innovation and reducing development time. The problem appeared to be that because engineers are very fond of technology they indulge themselves with products that are too complex and take too long to develop. As such, the problem left little room for maneuver, except trying to recruit engineers who hate technology. The client asked us to intervene in order to understand the issue better. Analysis revealed a fundamental mechanism that hindered competencies and goodwill. The new organization developed with the client allowed the reversal of this mechanism, thus favoring innovation and shortening development times by 40 percent, at a level 20 percent higher than the best performing competitors at that time.
Background
Yves obtained a PhD in industrial marketing at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, a diploma of quantitative superior study at the University of Glasgow, as well as a postgraduate certificate in sociology of organizations at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris. He advises at Insead, at the Superior Sociology Cycle of IEP and in conferences and publications about the dynamics of organizations.
