Instead of being a tourist or a mere observer in a country, I am an active participant, changing a country’s life for the better—with the chance to interact with many new people and make friends.

A Personal Story

I like to travel. To get the feel of a new country as a tourist I like to seat quietly in a park or a café for an hour or two, just observing what people around me are doing in their day-to-day life. With BCG it’s completely different. From the start of an international project I get to the very center of a country’s business life, and get exposed to dynamic industries and leading companies. As a BCG consultant I need to get familiar with a new industry, understand client issues quickly, and develop a solution. Instead of being a tourist or a mere observer in a country, I am an active participant, changing a country’s life for the better. It is a demanding task but is always very rewarding. The opportunity to experience countries from the inside by interacting with many people and making friends is second to none.

The opportunities BCG offers to experience other countries and cultures can vary from a couple of weeks spent on an overseas project to two-year office exchange programs. What is more intriguing is that you will be exposed to different cultures from many different countries even while sitting in your home office. All BCG offices are truly international. And the Moscow office is not different.

A Personal Story
One of the main benefits of BCG, which I did not realize before joining the company, is the opportunity to have international experience on a day-to-day basis. After almost two years with the Moscow office I’ve never had a project with a Russian project leader. I’ve worked with people from Poland, Germany, France, and the U.K., and through these people I’ve been exposed to new leadership and people management styles. It certainly is very different from my last employer (a big and well-known international company) in terms of the sheer magnitude of experience. I was also sure not to miss out on the opportunity to work outside Moscow and have had two big banking projects in Kiev. I have a good work–life balance and enjoyed the chance to see Kiev and Ukraine. I used my weekends to travel even further.
Background
Alexei joined BCG Moscow in February 2007 as a senior associate. He has since focused on financial services industry projects in Russia and Ukraine. Alexei holds an MA in state and municipal finance from the Higher School of Economics and is a Russian national. Before BCG, Alexei worked for three years in the financial services group of the tax department of Ernst & Young in Moscow.
